First international conference THE QUAESTURA EXERCITUS in its Regional Context: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives
The first international conference, The Quaestura Exercitus in its Regional Context: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives, will take place from the 16th to 19th September 2025, at the Varna Archaeological Museum, which is part of the Varna Regional Museum of History.
About the Event:
The conference is organized by the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Varna Regional Museum of History.
This scientific forum focuses primarily on the quaestura exercitus, which was a new military-administrative district formed during the time of Emperor Justinian I (527–565 AD). It encompassed two border provinces on the Lower Danube (Moesia Secunda and Scythia), as well as several inland provinces. The city of Odessos (modern-day Varna) was chosen as the centre of the quaestura.
The broader thematic scope of the conference also includes topics that are not directly related to the quaestura but are relevant to the region during the 6th century AD.
The conference delegates are established experts in the fields of history, archaeology, numismatics, and epigraphy, and come from Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Türkiye, Poland, Albania, and Serbia.
The conference will feature both presentations arranged in panels, and a poster session. The working language is English. The program and short abstracts can be downloaded here.
