Ancient and medieval coins are not just pieces of metal. They are witnesses of long-gone eras, bearers of historical memory and a source of information about the destinies of the people who created and used them.
Coins are the most familiar and accessible everyday objects for each person. As material, form, dimensions, functions and meaning of royal and state regalia, they have not undergone significant changes since their appearance 2700 years ago to the present day. This makes them easy to understand and at the same time arousing interest, as money – the real measure of of wealth, prosperity, social position, fame, etc.
The numismatic collection of Varna Regional Museum of History is impressive in terms of quantity and types of coins. It was formed over the perood of 120 years and contains thematic collections, treasures and coin complexes found during archaeological excavations.
In the new exposition the visitors can see Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, European and Ottoman coins, presenting the fascinating history of money through the centuries.
